Communication is the key to humanity. Trinidad is an island steeped in a rich culture and heritage. Its residents proudly remember its storied history, from the time of colonialism to its final independence in 1962 from Britain. But radio’s early beginnings have so far been buried in the shadows of Caribbean history. Yet, as a colony, one of Trinidad’s main outlets to the outside world was through the power of radio. In Radio Days in Colonial Trinidad, 1929-1939, author and Caribbean historian Richard M. Escalante presents the first of three books to explore this compelling subject, and retrieves it from history’s shadows to bask in the light of Caribbean scholarship. This well-researched book is divided into four sections: the geographical and technical conditions that gave rise to amateur radio and the emergence of amateur radio operators, the transition to broadcast radio in the wider context of American radio’s influence on this British colony as well as the economic aspects of broadcasting, the impact of radio content in colonial Trinidad in the areas of sports and cultural entertainment, and finally, an exploration of the ‘official mind’ of the Colonial Office toward the broadcasting of the BBC’s Empire Service to the British colonies as World War II rapidly approached. The book ends with a discussion of the legacy of radio in 1930s Trinidad. As a bonus, there is a never-before-seen biography of Diego Serrao, the first local broadcaster to put Trinidad ‘on air.’
